The IQOS ILUMA i Prime Black is the top model in the ILUMA i range from Philip Morris International. It pairs an anodised aluminium body and a textured black wrap with the three features that separate the i series from every earlier ILUMA: a touch screen, Pause Mode, and FlexPuff. Like the rest of the ILUMA family it heats tobacco with the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM instead of a blade, so nothing burns and nothing needs cleaning.

The black finish hides fingerprints better than the lighter colours, which matters more than it sounds when the device lives in a pocket all day.

The touch screen

Earlier ILUMA devices told you what was happening with LED dots. The i Prime replaces those with a small touch screen on the pocket charger. Tap it and you can see the preheating status and how long it has left, the time remaining in the current session, and how many uses the holder still has ready.

It sounds minor until you have used it for a week. Knowing whether you have one session left or two removes the habit of guessing from the light pattern, which is something users of the older IQOS ILUMA range will recognise.

FlexBattery: Performance Mode and Eco Mode

FlexBattery lets you decide whether you want more sessions now or a holder battery that lasts longer overall. You switch between the two modes in the IQOS app.

Most people leave it on Performance. Eco Mode makes sense if you use one stick at a time anyway and want the holder to stay healthy for longer. The gain depends on how you actually use the device, so treat the one year figure as a ceiling rather than a promise.

Pause Mode

Pause Mode stops a session and lets you pick it up again within 8 minutes. If you do not come back in that window, the holder switches itself off and the session ends. It works only in Performance Mode, and only during the first 3 minutes or first 8 puffs.

One catch worth knowing: when you use Pause, FlexPuff does not run for that session, and Performance Mode drops to 2 consecutive uses instead of 3.

FlexPuff

FlexPuff adapts to how you draw on the device. If your puffs are shorter than average, it can give you up to 4 extra puffs inside the same 6 minute window. It is on by default and you can turn it off in the IQOS app. Whether it triggers at all depends on your own puffing pattern, so not every session will produce the extra puffs.

TEREA sticks only, not HEETS

This is the single thing that trips up people upgrading from an older device. TEREA sticks have a metal induction element inside them. HEETS do not, so an ILUMA i Prime will simply do nothing with a HEETS stick. There is no workaround and no adapter.

Charging and day to day care

A full charge of the pocket charger takes about 135 minutes over USB-C and covers roughly 20 sessions. The holder tops up from the charger in a couple of minutes between sessions. Actual charging time varies with the power source, so a laptop port will be slower than the supplied adapter.

There is no cleaning routine with this device. Because nothing burns and there is no blade, tobacco residue does not build up inside the holder.
